Backups are an extremely important concept when doing anything
with computers. Files can be damaged or even destroyed by events
such as power failures, abnormal PC shutdowns, unsuccessful software
upgrades, or basic user error. You
should make it part of your routine to make regular backups of any
data on your computer to external media.
With regular backups, if your files are damaged, at least you
have something that you can restore. Your files may not be as up to
date as when the problem occurred, but at least you have something.
The more regular your backups, the less work you will lose if you
ever need to restore your files.
Proper backups ensure that your business is not
crippled due to data loss. It means you can avoid potential serious
losses in sales, increase employee productivity and decrease
computer maintenance costs and overhead.
Your backup regime should include more than just
a simple file backup onto tape or CD. If your computer crashes to
the extent that you cannot boot Windows, it is a lot of work to get
your system back up and running. In this situation, "image files"
are a great improvement over a conventional file backup. A backup
image includes everything on your hard drive, including your
operating system, applications, personal settings and all of your
data files. You only need to restore the backup image to have your
system back up and running, followed by your most recent file
backup. Images allow quick restoration of failed systems to a
specified point-in-time without taking hours to manually rebuild PCs
or reinstall applications from scratch.
